Sunshine and 70s today, cooler Wednesday with scattered afternoon storms

Gusty winds over northern Colorado will continue to decrease this evening ahead of a cold front due in tomorrow afternoon. Showers and storms likely Wednesday

DENVER — THE FORECAST BY: Meteorologist Chris Bianchi

FORECAST HEADLINES: We've had a fairly stiff breeze at times across the foothills and the northern part of the metro area this afternoon, but that should relax quickly tonight and give way to a quiet and pleasant evening and start to Wednesday.

We've had gusts up to the 40 mph range in Broomfield, Boulder and the northeastern plains along the I-76 corridor (and even a few isolated 50 mph gusts). Again, those winds die down pretty quickly in a few hours this evening.

Highs will top out in the low 70s in the Denver area this afternoon and likely for tomorrow as well. Tomorrow, though, a storm system moves in from the west that'll bring us a chance for some afternoon showers and storms, with an emphasis on the Eastern Plains for the highest risk for impactful weather.

A few stronger storms will be possible tomorrow in the Eastern Plains (map below), with large hail the main threat with any storms that develop. Logan, Washington, Yuma, Sedgwick, and Phillips Counties will have the highest chance for a stronger storm after about 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Again, large hail will be the main threat.

The majority of the storms likely stay just east of the Denver area, but a few computer models bring those storms pretty close to downtown. The best chance for a metro area shower or storm will be between 4 and 11 p.m. on Wednesday night. Most areas likely miss out.

Alongside the storms, a cold front swings through, knocking back temperatures a bit for Thursday (but not all that much).

Isolated storms return for Friday and Saturday before a drier back half of the weekend, and temperatures warm as well. We'll start May on a mild note with highs mostly in the upper 60s and 70s into early next week.

Enjoy the generally calmer weather while it lasts!
